Courtesy of a sensational bowling performance, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) restricted Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to a meagre 134 runs in the first innings. Notably, the two franchises have locked horns in match 29 of the ongoing IPL 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, April 21.

MS Dhoni, the skipper of CSK, won the toss and invited the visiting team to bat first. In an unprecedented move, Sunrisers Hyderabad decided to demote opener Mayank Agarwal down the order, at no. 6, against the yellow brigade. Coming into the match, SRH had the lowest powerplay run rate of 7.13 prior to the clash and pretty much maintained the same in the first innings against MS Dhoni and Co.

The opening duo of Harry Brook and Abhishek Sharma could only manage to get mere 35 runs before the former headed back to the pavilion for just 18 runs. However, Abhishek cracked three boundaries and one maximum to get 34 to his name.

SRH could post mere 45 runs in their powerplay (1-6 overs) for the loss of a wicket. What followed was a masterclass from skipper MS Dhoni, as he introduced spin into the attack post-powerplay. It paid CSK rich dividends as star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja got the scalps of Abhishek and Rahul Tripathi in quick time.

Skipper Aiden Markram too departed without much impact for 12 runs after being dismissed by Maheesh Theekshana. Down the order, Heinrich Klaasen and Mayank, too, failed to revive the innings and bail out their side from a crunch situation, and departed for 17 and two runs, respectively.

Ravindra Jadeja picked a three-wicket haul whereas Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana, and Akash Singh got one wicket apiece. A spirited bowling performance helped Chennai restrict the visiting team for a meagre 134 runs in their 20 overs of the contest.

SRH bowlers will need to up the ante and get the early breakthroughs in order to stay well on course during the chase. However, the opening duo of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway will aim to hand a solid head start and help extend the domination to earn two valuable points.
