Australia finished off a landslide victory by dominating the visitors and taking the lead by a wide margin. Throughout the series, England never seemed like a squad that could contend with the formidable Australians. On a pitch where a score of 270 looked like a winning total, Australian batters went big and got 355 runs on board, later winning the game by 221 runs (DLS method).

Batting first, Australian openers Travis Head and David Warner stunned everyone as they shared a record-breaking partnership at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The England bowlers kept struggling as the dynamic duo kept hitting them for some big runs. While Travis Head walked back scoring a brilliant 130-ball 152, Warner too claimed a century and hit 106 runs off 102 deliveries as the duo added 269 runs for the opening partnership.

It was very late, on the first ball of the 39th over when their partnership was broken, courtesy of Olly Stone who dismissed both the openers in the same over, within four deliveries. After the openers provided the side with an emphatic start, Steven Smith and Marcus Stoinis added a few runs on board before walking back to the dugout.

As for England bowlers, Stone picked up four wickets and Liam Dawson added one under his belt as Australia finished at a whopping 355/5 in 48 overs before rain stopped their innings. It was a very tough challenge for England, as they had to chase 364 runs in 48 overs as per the revised DLS target. England’s start to the chase did not go their way as they lost their opening batter, Dawid Malan, very early in the third over.

Jason Roy and James Vince steadied the ship after the early blow, but as Pat Cummins struck in the 13th over to dismiss Roy, England’s batting unit came crashing down. Apparently, Roy, who scored 33 runs off 48 deliveries, ended as his side’s leading run-scorer as no other batter could score more than 25 runs during the chase.

Australia bowlers kept picking up wickets at regular intervals, and all the big names- Sam Billings, Moeen Ali, and even skipper Jos Buttler were dismissed cheaply. Adam Zampa ended with four wickets, while skipper Cummins and Sean Abbot picked up two wickets each. Josh Hazelwood and Mitchell Marsh added one wicket each under their belt as the visitors were dished out for mere 142 runs in the 32nd over, and Australia bagged a massive 221-run victory.
