Mumbai Indians registered their first victory of the tournament after surviving a last-over thriller against the Delhi Capitals.

Rohit Sharma's side are finally off the mark in IPL 2023 after a narrow victory against bottom dwellers Delhi Capitals. It was edge-of-the-seat stuff at the Arun Jaitley Stadium as Anrich Nortje bowled a superb final over, only to lose the match on the last ball. Rohit Sharma laid the foundation for the victory with a brisk half-century in pursuit of a tricky total in Delhi.
Mumbai Indians made a flying start to the chase as skipper Rohit Sharma milked Mukesh Kumar's first over for 14 runs. The Indian skipper looked in glorious touch as the visitors raced their way to 68 runs in the first six overs of the field restriction.
Young Indian opener Ishan Kishan, who was enjoying his skipper hammer the Delhi bowlers from the other end, made his way back to the hut after a horrible mix-up in the middle. The home side clawed their way back into the match as the spinners started to dictate the terms in the middle overs.
Just when it looked like the game was heading for a tense final few overs, young batting bulwark Tilak Varma smashed Mukesh Kumar for two sixes and a boundary off consecutive deliveries to tilt the match in the favour of the five-time champions. However, Delhi hit back instantly with the wicket of the southpaw and Suryakumar Yadav in the same over.
Mumbai's skipper was next to depart as the visitors lost three wickets in the space of just six deliveries. The match was evenly poised, with the home side piling the pressure with a quiet over from speedster Anrich Nortje. But the match titled in the favour of the visitors yet again after Cameron Green and Tim David smashed two sixes in the penultimate over.
Axar Patel's heroics propel Delhi Capitals to a competitive total
It was the visiting team, led by Rohit Sharma, who won the toss and elected to bowl first on a tricky surface in Delhi. The home side were off to a brisk start before young Indian opener Prithvi Shaw departed after chancing his arm one too many times. But the home side recovered after that initial blow thanks to a steady stand between David Warner and Manish Pandey.
Veteran Indian leggie Piyush Chawla spun a web around the Delhi batters as he wrecked the hosts' middle order by scalping three crucial wickets. First, he dismissed the well-set Pandey and then went on to grab the big wickets of the hard-hitting pair of Rovman Powell and Lalit Yadav.
The home side were tottering at 98/5 in the 13th over of the match and that is when the innings turned on its head, thanks to a rollicking half-century from Axar Patel, his first in the competition. The Indian all-rounder registered a 22-ball fifty to give the Delhi innings a much-needed impetus in the middle overs.
However, the visitors pulled things back nicely in the last two overs of the first innings as Delhi Capitals lost their last five batters in the space of ten deliveries, failing to play out their quota of 20 overs.
