Lucknow Super Giants completed a sensational run chase to hand Royal Challengers Bangalore their second successive defeat of IPL 2023 in a last-over thriller in Bangalore. The home side had posted a challenging total on the board in their first innings, thanks to half-centuries from Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell. But Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran's heroics saw LSG climb to the top of the IPL 2023 points table.
Chasing a daunting target, the visitors got off to the worst start possible after hard-hitting opener Kyle Mayers departed without a run to his name in the very first over. It got progressively worse for the tourists as Deepak Hooda and Krunal Pandya were dismissed by Wayne Parnell in his very first over in IPL since 2014.
LSG were in all sorts of trouble with skipper KL Rahul running out of partners at the other end. That is when the game twisted, thanks to a blistering assault from Marcus Stoinis. The star Aussie all-rounder took a liking to RCB's slower bowlers as he smashed 65 runs in just 30 deliveries.
The visitors were in the driver's seat before the hosts hit back with the wickets of Stoinis and Rahul in quick succession to derail the LSG chase. But the match wasn't done quite yet as LSG's star wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran shell-shocked a full house at Chinnaswamy with a breathtaking assault.
Pooran tonked his way to a 15-ball half-century, the fastest of IPL 2023, and the joint second-fastest in IPL history to deflate the RCB bowlers. However, the match was headed towards a tense finale after Pooran was dismissed by the returning Mohammed Siraj in the 17th over of the chase. Ayush Badoni's cameo at the end brought his side to the cusp of victory as LSG eventually got over the line in a dramatic final over.
RCB's top-order fire them to a daunting total
It was local hero KL Rahul who won the toss and opted to field first on a belter of a batting wicket at Chinnaswamy. However, his decision backfired when the home side got off to a solid start thanks to a brisk opening stand between star batting duo, Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis.
While the RCB skipper struggled for timing in the initial stages of the innings, Kohli registered a brisk half-century, his second of the tournament to ensure a brilliant powerplay for the Men in Red and Gold. However, Kohli's departure saw the visitors wrestle the momentum in the middle overs.
The seven overs after the powerplay yielded just 48 runs as the Lucknow-based outfit were planning to restrict the home side to less than 200 runs on the board. But their hopes were shortlived as Glenn Maxwell's blistering innings ignited a fire in his skipper's belly at the other end.
Both Faf and Maxwell put on an incredible second-wicket partnership as RCB milked a staggering 108 runs in the last seven overs of the first innings, thanks to half-centuries from Maxwell and his skipper.
