The opening day of the fourth and final Test match of the ongoing series between India and Australia witnessed the tourists have their best day with the bat on a benign surface at the Narendra Modi Stadium. While Usman Khawaja stole the limelight with a fluent century, Cameron Green is looking in ominous touch from the other end.
A hot day in Ahmedabad saw the Indian bowlers toil hard on a surface which did not have much for the bowlers after Steve Smith won the toss and elected to bat first in the series finale. The tourists made a strong start to their innings after Travis Head and Usman Khawaja put on their highest opening stand of the series.
The Aussie batters bossed the first hour of the morning session, but the drinks break brought their downfall as veteran Indian offie Ravichandran Ashwin got rid of the dangerous Travis Head. Rohit Sharma's decision to bring Mohammed Shami back into the attack gave India the massive scalp of Marnus Labuschagne.

However, the visitors kept the Indian bowlers on bay after those two quick wickets and headed to tea without losing a wicket in the second session. But the home side clawed their way back into the contest in the post-tea session as Ravindra Jadeja brought an end to Steve Smith's resilience.
As the famous adage goes in cricket, one brings two, Australia lost Peter Handscomb to a ripper from Shami, losing two wickets in quick succession to set an intriguing final hour of play on the first day of the fourth Test. Unflustered by the wickets falling from the other end, Australian opener Usman Khawaja looked impregnable at the crease.
The Southpaw compiled a silky smooth century, his 14th in Tests, and has been fairly untroubled at the crease on what seems like a batting-friendly surface in Ahmedabad. Even though the tourists failed to score at a brisk rate throughout the day, Cameron Green looked in ominous touch during his steady partnership with Khawaja and milked a flurry of boundaries against a tired Indian bowling line-up in the last session of the day.
