The much hyped South Indian derby of the Indian Premier League got underway at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The home side, Royal Challengers Bangalore hosted the Chennai Super Kings in the marquee clash of the tournament. The two sides share one of the most celebrated rivalries in the tournament history, and hence, the buzz around the game was immense.

At the venue in Bengaluru, it was a packed house. It is not an everyday story to see the see of red in the ground being interspersed with some other color. But on the day, the yellow jerseys and the yellow flags matched the numbers in red as Virat Kohli’s side took on MS Dhoni’s eleven. Certainly, the stage was set for a cracker of a competition.

As the things stand at the half way mark, the fans of both teams got their moments to celebrate in the first innings. MS Dhoni won the toss and the Chennai Super Kings opted to bowl first. CSK struck early by dismissing Virat Kohli in the fifth over of the game. AB de Villiers and Quinton de Kock then put on an excellent exhibition of class hitting at the venue. AB de Villiers, in particular, looked in sublime form as he sent one out of the ground as well.

Both batsmen scored their respective fifties as the partnership for the second wicket was 103. Quinton de Kock scored 53 off 37 deliveries and ABD hammered a quick 30-ball 68 with 8 sixes in the match. It was in the 15th over when Imran Tahir struck twice to bring CSK back in the game. Tahir dismissed ABD and Corey Anderson on successive deliveries.

For a moment, it seemed that Royal Challengers Bangalore had lost the plot big time. However, a handy cameo from Mandeep Singh (32) gave some final impetus to the innings. Also, after three wickets fell in the final over, a short blitz of 11 runs off 7 balls from Washington Sundar helped RCB cross the 200-mark. RCB finished with 205/8 in their stipulated 20 overs.
