Twitter Reactions: David Warner century gives Australia the edge

Following Pakistan’s impressive first innings display in the 2nd Test at the MCG, the hosts Australia have bounced back strongly and courtesy a brilliant century from hard-hitting southpaw David Warner Australia reached 278/2 at stumps on Day 3. Pakistan opener Azhar Ali went on to register the highest ever score by Asian batsman at MCG and remained not out on 205. Pakistan eventually declared the innings with the score at 443/9. Ali’s innings contained 20 hits to the fence. The swashbuckling left-hander began in a shaky manner and was troubled consistently by Mohammad Amir. He was beaten several times and it seemed that it was just a matter of time before Warner gave away his wicket but the entertainer grind it out and reached yet another century in his already illustrious Test career. Warner took on the leg-spinner Yasir Shah and found the gaps on a consistent basis. He raced to his 23rd Test fifty off a mere 55 balls and looked settled for yet another big one. He played some delightful strokes of Amir, one cover drive and the other a perfectly timed on-drive. It was a terrific display of batsmanship by arguably the best left-hander of the modern generation and was ably supported by Usman Khawaja who finished the day’s play on 95. Warner was again troubled by the left-arm pace bowling duo of Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz when he was nearing his century. He was castled by Wahab Riaz with a peach of a delivery at his personal score of 81 but unfortunately for Pakistan and fortunately for Australia it was a big no-ball and Warner could breathe a sigh of relief. He raced on to his 17th Test century in 112 balls and stitched together a crucial 198 runs partnership with Usman Khawaja for the 2nd wicket. He carried on after his century and took on Yasir Shah in particular. Wahab Riaz eventually had the last laugh when he dismissed the left-hander 6 short of a well-deserved 150. It took the bottom part of the glove and was safely pouched by Sarfaraz Ahmed behind the stumps. Though the replays were inconclusive and hotspot wasn’t conclusive either but there was a little mark on the lower glove which went against the batsman.
