Twitter Reactions: David Warner plunders maiden double century: Different day, same story. David Warner and Usman Khawaja went about their business, as a hapless New Zealand bowling turned spectators.
By tea, Warner was on 129 and Usman Khawaja was on 69. The sole wicket had come shortly before lunch, when Matt Henry extracted some good bounce and an inside edge from Joe Burns, who played on for 40.
But not before he had combined with Warner for a third consecutive century opening stand; only Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer had previously achieved that feat for Australia.
The 29-year-old still goes hard, mighty hard in fact. But to everyone’s delight, he knows how to stay patient when the situation calls for it. Dot balls don’t bother him like they used to, and he’s become good at picking off singles when the field has been moved back.
Against New Zealand, he picked off 85 singles, while the innings also featured 136 dot balls. He notched up his century off 118 balls, with 12 boundaries. Australia reached 250 runs in the 55th over, while David Warner brought up his 150 off 182 balls.
He slammed 17 boundaries and 2 sixes to notch up his maiden double ton from 236 balls. He carried his bat through, as Australia finished on 416/2 in 90 overs. Warner was unbeaten on 244*, with 22 boundaries and 2 sixes.
