Sri Lanka, on Friday, December 3, defeated West Indies by 164 runs to win the second and final Test against the West Indies by 164 runs at the Galle International Stadium. With the win, they have also whitewashed the series 2-0. Moreover, the Islanders have managed to garner 12 points in the 2021-23 World Test Championship. The Caribbean team, meanwhile, has returned empty-handed.

Sri Lanka set West Indies a massive target

By the close of Day four, the Lankans had taken a massive lead of 279 runs. Lasith Embuldeniya and Dhananjaya de Silva had stitched together a 100 plus stand for the ninth wicket. The Caribbean team had every chance of getting the hosts by the scruff of their necks. But the home team showed a great amount of resurgence. In the end, they set West Indies a target of 297 runs in the last innings.

The Lankans declared their innings on 345 immediately after Jason Holder castled Embuldeniya, who scored a handy 124-ball 39 with the help of two fours and one six. West Indies got off to a poor start in their run-chase as Ramesh Mendis removed their skipper Kraigg Brathwaite. Thereafter, Jermaine Blackwood and Nkrumah Bonner put on 47 runs for the second wicket to bring sanity back into proceedings.

Embuldeniya, Mendis pick up fifers

Embuldeniya separated the duo after he pinned Blackwood, who made 36. Bonner also racked up a fighting 44 with the help of three fours. But once they perished, the rest of the Caribbean batting crumbled like a house of cards. Roston Chase and Kyle Mayers failed to open their accounts. Shai Hope got a start, scoring 16 with one four, but he fell prey to Ramesh Mendis in the 44th over.

Jason Holder and Joshua ds Silva got out in the single digits as well. Kemar Roach showed some fight, but his efforts were never going to be enough for West Indies to win. Embuldeniya and Mendis also went on to pick up five-wicket hauls. It took only 45.1 overs for the duo to take the visitors down. Praveen Jayawickrama and Charith Asalanka also rolled their arms over for 11 overs.
