Team England received a serious setback when they were beaten by 9 wickets in the first Test against the visiting Pakistani side. The visitors showed great skill with bat and the ball in the Lord’s Test to take a 1-0 lead in the 2-match Test series. The action moved to Headingley for the second Test. The match is all about resurgence for the hosts. And at the end of the first day of the match, England would be happy with the way things panned out for them on the day.

Pakistan won the toss and opted to bat first on a track that looked like a batting deck. Both England and Pakistan had a forced change with Ben Stokes and Babar Azam not playing the match. The move, however, did not work for the visiting side. The English new ball bowlers, James Anderson and Stuart Broad, wreaked havoc with the new cherry to push the Pakistani lineup on the back foot. The procession started in the very second over of the game with Broad dismissing Imam-ul-Haq on a duck.

Soon, Broad sent the other opener, Azhar Ali packing on 2. Haris Sohail (28) and Asad Shafiq (27) showed brief resistance before Chris Woakes accounted for both their dismissals. The innings crashed as the pacers restricted Pakistan to 79/7 at one stage in the game. Shadab Khan played a lone ranging 56 off 52 deliveries to see the visitors post 174 in their first innings. Broad, Anderson, and Woakes scalped three wickets each in the innings.

When England stepped out to bat, they seemed to be batting on a different track altogether. Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings added 53 runs for the first wicket before Jennings departed for 29 with Faheem Ashraf getting the wicket. Joe Root joined Cook at the crease.

Alastair Cook played very well for his 46 but ended up getting dismissed in the final minutes of the day’s play. He scored 46 off 106 deliveries. He was sent packing by Hasan Ali. Dominic Bess came in at number 4 as the night watchman. He managed to hang around as England finished the day with 106/2. Joe Root remained unbeaten on 29 and the English side now trail by only 68 runs.

Here is how the cricket world reacted to the day’s proceedings:
