In the last edition of the Indian Premier League, Glenn Maxwell was bought by Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) for INR 10.75 crores. The Australian big-hitter failed to get a big score for them. He scored only 108 runs in that entire season and couldn’t even hit a single six. However, in the IPL 2021, he has been on fire for Royal Challengers Bangalore so far.

On Sunday, the Aussie all-rounder smashed 78 runs from just 49 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. On a pitch that has not been best for batting, Maxwell put up a brilliant display of attacking batsmanship combined with smart tactics. He came out to bat in the second over with RCB under pressure having lost Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar.

After this, Maxwell started compiling a recovery for RCB while Devdutt Padikkal supported him at the other end quite well. Padikkal got out in the 12th over for 25 but by then RCB had reached 95 runs. After this, AB de Villiers joined Maxwell at the crease. The duo started taking on the KKR bowlers quite freely and frequently.

As the innings went on, Maxwell also became the highest run-getter in the competition. The Australian hit nine fours and three sixes. The commentators credited the decision of sending Maxwell ahead of AB de Villiers pointing that it has allowed him to bat freely and without stress. The Victorian finally gave an answer to the critics who raised questions when he was bought by RCB for INR 14.25 crores.

AB de Villiers picked up the innings after Maxwell left. The duo had notched up a 53-run stand before Pat Cummins dismissed the latter. The South African scored 76 runs from just 34 balls at a strike rate of 223.53. He hit nine fours and three sixes, taking on Andre Russell in the death overs.

His batting assault helped Bangalore reach a huge total of 204 for 4. Bangalore scored 56 runs in the last three overs. For KKR, Varun Chakravarthy picked up two wickets in the powerplay and was the pick of the bowlers.
