In the clash of the two newbies of this year’s IPL the Rising Pune Supergiants and the Gujarat Lions, the latter again managed to get the better of the former. Captain Suresh Raina won the toss as Gujarat elected to field first. While GL brought in rookie Chinaman Shivil Kaushik, RPS had Peter Handscomb and Albie Morkel coming in.
Batting first, RPS lost Saurabh Tiwary early due to a confusion resulting in a run out. From there on it was the Steve Smith show all the way. He went on to register his maiden T20 century as he raced his way to a magnificent 101 off just 54 balls. His partner Ajinkya Rahane too did well for his 53 from 45 balls.
Skipper MS Dhoni provided the finishing touches in the end as his cameo of 30* (18) took RPS total to a mammoth 195/3 in their quota of 20 overs. DJ Bravo took the lone wicket while the rest were run outs.
Gujarat Lions openers began in an exhilarating fashion as they smashed 94 runs in just 8 overs. While Dwayne Smith scored 63 runs off just 37 balls, McCullum raced to 43 from 22 balls as they set the platform for the chase. Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik were doing well but once they got out, Gujarat were in a spot of bother. James Faulkner took the Lions hit a boundary on the last ball as GL secured a 3-wicket win.
Ashok Dinda and Thisara Perera picked 2 wickets apiece but they were quite expensive. Twitter kept everyone at the edge of the seats in a thrilling encounter between the GL and RPS. Right from lauding both Smiths to trolling Kaushik’s action, here are some of the Twitter reactions that took place during the course of the game:

The fact that DK is dismantling Ashwin is damn scary. Where are you, Ash? #IPL9

Dwayne Smith and Suresh Raina batting, Ashwin bowling, Dhoni keeping.
Last year, the same thing happened during @ChennaiIPL net practice.— Sameer Allana (@HitmanCricket) April 29, 2016
Awesome, brutal assault by Smith and McCullum. Cant imagine any team would want to bowl to these guys…

What kind of players Dwayne Smith & Brendon McCullum are, even 190+ runs are looking not enough.#RPSvGL

Six years ago Steve Smith made his Test debut as a leg spinner who batted at eight. Mad, innit?
