The first T20I at Eden Gardens in Kolkata was comprehensively won by India, the home team, by five wickets. However, the match turned out to be a low scoring affair. The second encounter in Lucknow definitely hasn’t turned out to be low-scoring as India racked up 195 runs against the Windies courtesy of opening batsman Rohit Sharma, who was brilliant with the willow in hand.

Dhawan and Rohit make hay

The Windies won the toss and had no hesitation to field first on a wicket which looked good for batting. However, the decision backfired to a large extent as Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan got their team off to a blistering start with an opening partnership of 123 runs from 84 deliveries. They didn’t blaze off initially and saw off the opening burst from fast bowler Oshane Thomas.

However, they picked up gradually and put on 49 runs in the first six overs. The duo went from strength to strength and kept finding the boundaries with sheer ease. Khary Pierre, who was impressive in his debut in Kolkata, was taken for 49 runs and was carted for three boundaries and as many sixes. In the first 10 overs, the Men in Blue had the Windies by the scruff of their necks.

Rohit notches his fourth T20I ton

Windies got their first breakthrough when Dhawan went for a slog sweep off left-arm spinner Fabian Allen only to be caught by Nicholas Pooran at long leg. The fielder fumbled a wee bit but managed to hold on to the leather. Rishabh Pant was promoted to bat at number three, but he couldn’t make an impact as Pierre got his consolation wicket, caught by Shimron Hetmyer in the deep.

However, Rohit carried on in his own merry way and kept peppering the boundaries, much to the agony of the visiting team. The Nagpur-born cricketer eventually racked up his fourth century in the format off merely 58 balls with the help of eight fours and seven sixes. KL Rahul played a short, yet blistering hand of 26 from 14 deliveries with a couple of fours and a six to propel the home team’s score.
