The Feroz Shah Kotla stadium witnessed a spectacular all-round performance from the hosts. It also marked the swansong of Ashish Nehra’s international career as he was felicitated by the team before the match began. This was India’s first win against New Zealand in T20 Internationals. Earlier in the day, it was skipper Kane Williamson who won the toss as the Kiwis elected to bowl first. They included Tom Bruce and Ish Sodhi in the playing XI. As for India, they went in with Nehra and debutant Shreyas Iyer.
Batting first, India were off to a stellar start. Shikhar Dhawan, playing in front of his home crowd began the game in rampant fashion. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma began slow but soon caught up with Dhawan later into the innings. Both put up a magnificent 158-run partnership for the first wicket.
While Shikhar Dhawan scored a splendid 80 runs from just 52 balls, Rohit was also on a hitting spree with 80 (55). Hardik Pandya who was promoted at No.3 was out for a duck. It was up to skipper Virat Kohli to portray his pinch-hitting skills and he donned it really well with 26 (11)*. MS Dhoni who came to bat in the last over hit a six on the first ball he faced.
Team India managed to post a total of 202/3 in their quota of 20 overs. With the exception of Ish Sodhi who had exceptional figures of 2/25, the rest of the bowling line-up was taken to the cleaners as the Rohit-Dhawan partnership took the visitors by storm.
With dew and a small ground, there was a probability of New Zealand going all the way to chase the target. However, India bowled splendidly to restrict the run flow of the Kiwi batsmen. Both the openers Martin Guptill and Colin Munro were dismissed cheaply.
Williamson and Tom Latham tried to hang in at the crease but ended up wasting too many deliveries which increased the required rate significantly. As the pressure got onto the batsmen, New Zealand went on to lose wickets in a heap. From 54/2, the Kiwi batting lineup was reduced to 99/7.
Mitchell Santner provided a few hits to entertain the crowds in the end as the Kiwis fell short of the target by 53 runs. Nehra went on to bowl the last over of the game. Both the spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel came in to play as they picked up a couple of wickets each. Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar managed to get a wicket each.
Twitter was all set to bid adieu to their beloved Nehra ji as various memes came in for the same. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan were lauded for their splendid batting performance while the Kiwis were trolled.
