In an 8-over affair for the series decider, thanks to the delayed start due to rain, India managed to produce a sensational win by just 6 runs. With this win, they went on to secure a 2-1 series win after winning the One-Day International series by the same margin.

Earlier in the day, it was skipper Kane Williamson who won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Kiwis made one change as Colin de Grandhomme was included in the playing XI. As for the hosts, Manish Pandey and Kuldeep Yadav were brought on in place of Axar Patel and Mohammed Siraj.

India were off to a poor start. While Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma began slow, they failed to accelerate as Tim Southee sent both of them back to the pavilion off consecutive balls. Virat Kohli got out after hitting a six and a four off Ish Sodhi.

While Manish Pandey played a good hand, wickets kept falling at the other end. Hardik Pandya too managed to hit a six and a boundary as he stayed not out on 14 10)*. MS Dhoni who came at No.7 today didn’t face a single ball. India could only manage 67/5 in their quota of 8 overs.

Southee was the pick amongst New Zealanders with figures of 2/13. Sodhi also got a couple of wickets but conceded 23 runs. Trent Boult was exceptional with 1/13 in 2 overs. On the other hand, Santner went wicketless.

New Zealand who were chasing 68 runs started well with a six on the second ball of the innings. However, both Martin Guptill and Colin Munro were dismissed in a space of four balls as the pressure boiled down to the Kiwis. The Indians bowled tight in the first few overs and applied the pressure that got them the wickets.

Some hits by Glenn Phillips and de Grandhomme did bring the game really close. However, some stupendous bowling by Yuzvendra Chahal who gave away 8 in his two overs followed by an eventful penultimate over by Bumrah. Hardik Pandya managed to defend 19 runs in the last over.

Twitter was at it’s splendid best. Right from lauding Manish Pandey and Virat Kohli to trolling the Indian openers, from lauding Indian bowlers to trolling Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls.
