Jason Roy, over the years, has emerged as a dynamic prospect for English cricket, especially in the limited-overs formats. He doesn’t mind taking the attack to the opposition and is renowned for his aggressive brand of cricket. England were thrashed black and blue by Australia in the Ashes. However, One-Day cricket is a different ball game altogether.

After a one-sided Test series, the arch-rivals locked horns in the first One Day International at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Australia carried forward their rich vein of form as they carted the English bowlers to score 304 runs in 50 overs. However, they encountered a cyclone in the form of Roy who blew them away with a stupendous knock of 180 runs off 150 balls.

Records galore

Australia leaked runs at an alarming rate as the South African-born cricketer unleashed his wide array of strokes. He also smashed records en route his awe-inspiring display with the willow. He notched his ton in 92 balls, which was the joint second-fastest century by an English batsman against Australia after Eoin Morgan’s ton off 85 balls at Southampton in 2010.

Jason Roy also surpassed Robin Smith as the highest individual scorer for England against Australia in One Day Internationals when reached 155. Last but not the least, he took down Alex Hales’ record of the highest score by an English batsman in ODIs when he breached 171 runs. Joe Root acted as an appropriate foil for Roy as he scored a useful hand of 91 runs off 110 balls.

He eventually perished to Mitchell Starc when he attempted to hoick the left-arm pacer over square-leg only to holed out in the deep. Riding on Roy’s masterclass England chased down 305 runs with 7 balls to spare. Meanwhile, they also ensured the highest ever run-chase in ODIs at the MCG. After Roy’s exhibition and England’s maiden victory of the tour, Twitter showered their praises over the visitors.
