Another one-sided encounter greeted the Mzansi Super League (MSL) 2018. Nelson Mandela Bay Giants won quite comprehensively in the game against Durban Heat by a margin of 9 wickets. JJ Smuts led the team from the front in the chase and played a perfect captain’s knock. Junior Dala, who picked two wickets and bowled an economical spell was named the ‘Man of the Match’.

The middle-order provides some resistance after the top order failure

Durban Heat was put into bat first and there was some swing on offer for the pacers early on. Hence, the bowlers quickly ran through the top four batsmen. Hashim Amla scored 12 runs while van Wyk and David Miller got out for a duck. Heinrich Klaasen also ended up disappointing as he hit one of Chris Morris’ delivery straight to the cover fielder.

The side was down to 58/5 in the 12th over and would be more than pleased with the way they recovered. Twenty-plus scores from the next four batsmen got them to 127/6 in 20 overs. Skipper Albie Morkel was injured in the course of the innings as Philander hit one hard straight back which struck him on the wrist. He was taken for scans immediately and didn’t take the field in the remainder of the game.

JJ Smuts plays a responsible innings

Khaya Zondo led the Durban Heat in the second innings of the game. Although the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants had an opportunity to go for the glory and gain a bonus point, they didn’t opt to do so. They played some cautious cricket and ensured they didn’t lose many wickets. Skipper JJ Smuts was great with an unbeaten 62 which he got off 52 balls.

His partner Marco Marais also played some careful cricket and got 42 off 38 balls before Philander dismissed him. Ben Duckett finished things off with a clinical 21 as the Giants got there with 15 balls to spare and 9 wickets left. With this win, they have now raised up to the second place on the points table.

Twitter was pleased to see this clinical performance. However, few fans were disappointed with the game being a one-sided while many prayed for the quick recovery of the injured Albie Morkel.
