Both Bangladesh and Afghanistan lost their first matches of the Super 4 in the 2018 Asia Cup and desperately needed a victory. They are currently locking horns today at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi and the Tigers posted a competitive score of 249 for the loss of seven wickets in their 50 overs after Asghar Afghans got them by the scruff of their necks with wickets at regular intervals.

Harakiri by Bangladesh

The start wasn’t auspicious for Bangladesh by any means as Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Mohammad Mithun were nipped out by Aftab Alam and Mujeeb Ur Rahman respectively. Thereafter, Liton Das, who couldn’t score in the first three matches, buckled down along with Mushfiqur Rahim to resurrect the innings. The duo added 63 runs from 79 deliveries.

However, Das perished for 41 runs after going for an outrageous stroke off Rashid Khan. The next couple of overs turned out to be a nightmare for Bangladesh as Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim succumbed to a couple of horrendous run-outs. In the meantime, half the Tigers’ batting lineup back was back in the pavilion in the 21st over with the score at 87.

Tigers script comeback

The onus was on Mahmudullah and Imrul Kayes, who replaced Mosaddek Hossain, to guide their team to a respectable score. The Afghan tweakers were in operation and the task was never going to be easy for the duo. However, they didn’t get flustered and put on a stand of 128 runs to put Bangladesh in a commanding position from where they can inject impetus into the innings.

Mahmudullah and Kayes scored 74 and 72 runs respectively and they got separated when the former was dismissed by Aftab Alam. The pacer picked up his second wicket in the form of Mortaza, the Bangladeshi captain. However, Kayes went on to play till the very end and made sure that the Tigers’ bowlers have something to bowl during Afghanistan’s run chase.
