The Eden Gardens witnessed the Kolkata Knight Riders register their third victory in this year’s IPL as Sun Risers Hyderabad fell 17 runs short of the target. With this win, they shoot right at the top of the points table.
Earlier in the day, it was captain David Warner who won the toss as Sun Risers Hyderabad elected to bowl first. Moises Henriques came into the playing XI in place of Mustafizur Rahman. For KKR, it was Kuldeep Yadav who replaced Piyush Chawla from the last game.
The experiment of opening with Sunil Narine didn’t work this time though as he was dismissed early. Gautam Gambhir too was outdone by a Rashid Khan delivery leaving KKR reeling at 40/2. However, Robin Uthappa played a gem of a knock with exceptional innings of 68 runs from 39 balls.
Manish Pandey also joined the party with a hefty knock of 46 runs from just 35 balls. While Suryakumar Yadav and Colin De Grandhomme failed to get going, Yusuf Pathan gave some finishing touches with his cameo of 21(15)* to propel the home team’s total to 172/6 in their quota of 20 overs.
For Hyderabad, Bhuvneshwar Kumar led the bowling ranks with stupendous figures of 3/20. Ashish Nehra and Ben Cutting also managed to take a wicket each, though they were taken to the cleaners by the KKR batsmen.
The Hyderabadi duo of David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan didn’t lose a single wicket in the power play overs though they didn’t score runs at a quick pace too. As both got out, the onus fell on Yuvraj Singh to deliver. Just when it seemed, he was getting into the groove, he ended up skying one in the hands of substitute fielder Rishi Dhawan.
Ben Cutting and Moises Henriques failed to make any difference. While Bipul Sharma played an excellent cameo, the Sun Risers Hyderabad still fell short of 17 runs. For Kolkata, spinners Sunil Narine and Kuldeep Yadav lead the bowling attack with some splendid bowling. Robin Uthappa was rewarded the man of the match for his knock.
