In another rain-interrupted affair on Day 2 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata only 21 overs could be bowled throughout the day. However, the first session proved to be an intriguing one. The pitch continued to generate much assistance for the pacers while the batsmen sensed they were playing in England.
Ajinkya Rahane who was looking good ended up throwing his wicket away. Coming out to bat at No.6, Ravichandran Ashwin tried to get a pinch of the conditions. However, he too failed to prolong his stay at the crease as India were left reeling at 50/5.
For a change today it was Dasun Shanaka who was amongst the wickets. He accounted for the wickets of both Rahane and Ashwin. Lahiru Gamage bowled well but didn’t get wickets. Suranga Lakmal continued to follow up yesterday’s spectacle with another splendid spell.
However, if there was one Indian batsman who maintained to display his grit and determination, it was Cheteshwar Pujara. Batting for 102 balls, Pujara hit 9 boundaries in his innings of 47 not out. Having had a county stint recently with Nottinghamshire, Pujara must have had a similar feeling playing on the green top under overcast conditions at Eden Gardens.
On the other hand, Wriddhiman Saha managed to hold on to the crease before rain spoiled yet another day of cricket. With the forecast better for tomorrow, the Eden Gardens would be hoping for a better turnout and a full day of cricket. Looking at the conditions, there are still chances of a result by the end of the five days.
Twitter enjoyed the first session of the game thoroughly. While they had reservations about the weather conditions, it was an exciting session of game, to say the least. While Pujara was lauded for his fantastic batting, Rahane faced trolls for losing his patience.
Here we present to you some of the Twitter reactions from today’s play:
Give Ashwin this much, along with Rahane he is the joint second highest scorer in the Indian innings.
May the four be with him.#IndvSL

Just dotting it up on such green tops means you are just waiting for a good ball with your name written on it, got to move the game. Rahane moved the game at Lord's in 2014, that's why we won.

Well people is trolling Rahane now.
Ok but he will be the Man who will save India in Overseas tours— Lokendra Singh (@Lokendr00012) November 17, 2017

Indian top order: 0, 8, 0, 4, 4.
Cheteshwar Pujara: batting on 47.
And this was the man dropped from the Test team.
Another away year is coming up. Hopefully the same mistake won't be repeated.

Pujara is India's best Test batsman. After showing his steel against Australian pacers on lively wickets earlier, this is yet another resolute knock.

Che Pujara should raise his bat when he gets to a 30. And the dressing room should stand up and applaud. #IndvsSL

To recount what John Wright told Rahul Dravid at Leeds in 2002, if Pujara converts this into a century, it could be the highest point on his CV

This was a kind of track, a full length game would have brought real characters of both sides, would hv been real Test #IndvSL

Such an intriguing session this – sadly only a few hundred watching the Test at Eden. Has Test cricket only become a TV sport? #IndvSL

What's the difference between Pujara and other players today?
This shot called 'well left'. #INDvSL— Krithika (@krithika0808) November 17, 2017
This was earlier today. The way things are going, India's bowlers might need to put Ashish Nehra's tips to use sooner than they would like #INDvSL pic.twitter.com/bt7z7nMR1T
