Kolkata Knight Riders entered the game with a loss in their previous encounter against the Mumbai Indians, who were aided by some brilliant display of batting from the young Delhi all-rounder Nitish Rana. The Knight Riders further received bad news in the form of the injury to their opener Chris Lynn after his tremendous performance in the first game. They were boosted by the return of their pace spearhead Umesh Yadav, who’s return would come in handy for the side.

Kolkata’s skipper Gautam Gambhir won the toss and elected to field on the pitch which offered more support to the chasing team than the team batting up front. The management decided to give the New Zealand all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme a well-deserved debut and also included the injured pace bowler Umesh Yadav into the team after his recovery.

The Knight Riders got off to the worst of starts as the West Indian spinner dropped a catch early on in the innings. Manan Vohra and Hashim Amla got the Kings XI Punjab to the best of starts as they scored 50 runs in the first five overs of the encounter. Vohra’s incredible innings of 28 came to an end when the leggie Piyush Chawla uprooted his off stump. Marcus Stoinis joined the South African Hashim Amla in the middle of the park and put up a 13-run partnership before the latter was dismissed off a straighter delivery bowled by the West Indian Sunil Narine.

Glenn Maxwell’s form was a worry for Gambhir and co, but they managed to dismiss both Amla and Maxwell in the span of two overs to leave the side open at 98/4 at the beginning of the 13th over of innings. The partnership between Wriddhiman Saha and David Miller helped them cross the 150 mark before their dismissals with Umesh Yadav’s consecutive deliveries. The Kings XI team ended their innings with the total of 170 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs.

The Knight Riders took the cricketing world to surprise when they made Sunil Narine open the innings alongside the usual opener Gautam Gambhir. Little did the KKR fans expect what wonders Narine could do with the willow in his hand. Sunil Narine helped the Knight Riders to get off to a good start with an outstanding knock of 37 runs in the matter of 18 deliveries. The captain Gautam Gambhir anchored the innings with support from Robin Uthappa and the in-form Manish Pandey. The captain remained unbeaten with the score of 72 runs in 49 deliveries with a strike rate of 146.94.

The win would come as a boost for the Knight Riders after their narrow defeat at the hands of Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians. Further, the mystery spinner Sunil Narine was declared as the man of the match following his outstanding display with both the bat and the ball. The West Indian gave away only 19 runs in his quota of four overs picking up the wicket of Marcus Stoinis and scored 37 runs in just 18 balls with a strike rate of 205.56. In the innings of 37, the West Indian had scored three sixes and four boundaries.
