Ever since Moeen Ali left for England’s Test duties, Liam Livingstone has been in charge of the Birmingham Phoenix in the Men’s Hundred. He hasn’t let his team down as the Phoenix have made a direct entry into the final after their eight-wicket win over Northern Superchargers at Headingley in Leeds.
Livingstone steps up with the ball
After being put in to bat first, Chris Lynn and Tom Kohler Cadmore’s 95-run stand for the opening wicket off 54 balls put the Superchargers on the driver’s seat. But once Livingstone nipped out Lynn for 34, the Superchargers’ innings slowed down. The other batters failed to make any impact.
Cadmore played until the very last ball and scored 71 runs off 44 balls with four fours and five sixes. David Willey, Jordan Thompson and John Simpson hit a six each, but couldn’t carry on. Livingstone starred with the ball with three wickets. Adam Milne and Benny Howell got two scalps each.
Livingstone shines with the bat
In the run-chase, the Phoenix lost Will Smeed to Willey in the fourth ball. Thereafter, Finn Allen and Livingstone’s 106-run partnership demoralised the Superchargers. Allen got out for 42 runs off 26 balls, but by then, the Phoenix needed 32 runs off 45 balls with as many as eight wickets in hand.
Livingstone kept wreaking havoc as he stayed unbeaten on 92 off 40 with three fours and 10 sixes. The skipper stayed until the very end and helped his team track down 144 with 26 balls to spare. As far as the Superchargers were concerned, their tournament came to a close with the defeat.
After the victory, Livingstone heaped praises on his teammates for playing fearless cricket in the tournament. He also lauded Imran Tahir, Benny Howell and Adam Milne for delivering with the ball.
“I’ve really enjoyed playing cricket with these boys, we’ve got a young and fearless line-up and we’ve seen some great talent come through. You play cricket to make finals and we’ve done that. Whatever happens, we’ve proved a lot of people wrong in this comp,” Livingstone said.
“Immy’s [Imran Tahir] been a hero, Milne at the death showed why he’s one of the best. Benny [Howell] does the ugly work, never goes for runs, they’ve done well all tournament,” he added.
Here’s how the netizens reacted to Birmingham Phoenix’s win at Headingley:

Completely different player to Roy. Liam Livingstone is a man whose strength was first class cricket who worked hard to become a white ball player – the opposite way round to Roy. In addition Livingstone bowls and can captain a side well. He should debut now not the Ashes.
