Twitter Reactions: Mark Steketee's 4-wicket haul and a collective batting effort help Brisbane Heat beat Sydney Sixers

A collective effort from the Brisbane Heat led them to a straightforward victory against the Sydney Sixers in the 24th clash of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2020-21. After opting to bat first, the most notable contributions with the bat for the Sixers came from Josh Philippe and Jordan Silk, who guided them to a par score of 165 at Gabba, Brisbane.

The start for Sixers was not too great as Jack Edwards, after scoring a run-a-ball 10, thick-edged a fuller delivery outside the off stump from Mujeeb Ur Rahman straight to point. The next passage of play, however, fell in favour of the batting side with both Philippe and James Vince exploiting the situation to their advantage.

Though Vince could not convert his start as he was caught behind off Lewis Gregory after scoring 20 from 16, his 49-run stand from 30 deliveries for the second-wicket did situate the Sixers in a sturdy position before Mark Steketee ruined things for them.

Sixers lose their way in the middle

Daniel Hughes (2) was undone by Steketee cheaply, however, the wicket belonged as much to Peter Handscomb, who grabbed a blinder behind the wickets. The Sixers lost their way once Xavier Bartlett claimed the wicket of Philippe (48 from 36) trapping him LBW in the 12th over. Dan Christian, who became Mujeeb’s second scalp, and Carlos Brathwaite, who fell for a duck, squandered the early momentum.

However, Jordan Silk, before being cleaned up by Steketee, slammed five fours in his 43 from 27 and added crucial 30 runs for the 7th wicket alongside Ben Dwarshuis, who scored 24 from 16.

Bryant-Denly set the tone for Heat

During the Heat’s chase, no single batsman took the entire responsibility, however, several small and valuable contributions after Max Bryant’s quick-fire 40 from 23 at the top, which included six boundaries and a six, meant that they did not face too many troubles. Ben Dwarshuis and Daniel Christian bagged a couple of wickets each, although none of their bowlers could take wickets at regular intervals as they lost while batting.

The 46-run second-wicket stand between Joe Denly (19 from 17) and Bryant had set the tone for the chase after the early loss of Joe Burns, whose outside edge flew to third man where Manenti took a simple catch to give an early breakthrough to Sixers. Reduced to 121 for 6 after the dismissals of Sam Heazlett (17 from 17), Jimmy Peirson (20 from 19), and their talisman from the last game James Bazley (5 from 4), the Heat found themselves in a tricky situation.

However, Lewis Gregory, through his 31 from 16, featuring a couple of sixes and as many fours, alongside Jack Wildermuth, who raced of to 22 from just 10, ensured that Heat chased the target with 7 balls to spare and 4 wickets in hand to register their second win of the season.
