Sydney Sixers found their groove in the later stage of the tournament as they won their last three games but since they are already knocked out, this game was a dead rubber. At the other end, their opponent Melbourne Stars always found ways to lose the game one would feel. Stars too were out of the tournament with as many as 7 defeats in 8 games. Sixers’ skipper Hohan after winning the toss asked Pietersen-less Stars to set a target batting first. Pietersen was replaced by Rob Quiney while Michael Beer took Jackson Coleman’s place.

Maxwell-Quinney show

Bowlers didn’t disappoint the skipper as they sent the openers back to the dressing room in the first 4 overs and kept the score to just 19. But Glenn Maxwell who was struggling with Conjunctivitis had some other plans as he went bang bang in the Sean Abbott over where he hit 2 sixes and a four. Maxwell got an equally able partner in Quiney who was attacking from the other end. He smashed 2 fours a six in a Moises Henriques over.

Maxwell completed his half-century in just 23 balls. Quiney deposited Nathan Lyon for a six before becoming his first victim as he was stumped by Peter Nevil for 37 which came off just 23 balls. The partnership yielded 119 runs for the Stars to put them in a commanding position in the match.

Sixers’ disciplined performance towards the end overs brought them back in the game. Carlos Braithwaite ended Maxwell’s innings of 83 to put an end to the assault. Stars could only hit 3 fours in last 6 overs as what could have been a 200-plus target was restricted to 189 runs.

The run chase was dented in the first over itself when Daniel Hughes’ pull was grabbed superbly by Gulbis. The new man Nic Maddinson was no respite for the Stars from the start as he hit a six on the second ball he faced to clear his intentions. Both Denly and Maddinson attacked the bowlers from the word go as they put them under pressure.

Six Balls, Six Fours

James Faulkner was on the receiving end in his 2nd over. It was Nic Maddinson. The carnage saw the ball travelling towards the boundary for all the six times. Maddinson completed his half-century in just 22 balls. The Sixers’ reached their hundred in the 9th over when Denly deposited Lia Bowe for 2 sixes.

Stars’ skipper John Hasting bought some respite when he sent Maddinson back to the pavilion for 61 which came of just 26 balls with the help of 9 fours and 3 sixes. Joe Denly continued his onslaught to bring up his half-century.

The Stars could never recover from the early slaughter from Denly and Maddinson. Moises Henriques joined the party and hit 21 off 13 deliveries to take the game away from the Stars. 72 not out from Deny was more than enough for the Sixers as they chased down the target comfortably.
