Australia Women defeated India by six wickets in Match 18 of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 at the Eden Park in Auckland on March 19. The Indian team looked forward to repeat their Women’s World Cup 2017 semifinal heroics, after having posted a mammoth 277/7 on the board in their first innings but that wasn’t enough. By the virtue of this win, Australia keep their unbeaten run intact in this tournament, having won all their five matches so far.
The Aussies gave no chance to the Indian bowlers in the second innings as openers Rachel Haynes, explosive batter Alyssa Healy and skipper Meg Lanning hit them to all corners of the short boundaries at Eden Park and came out on top in a high-scoring run-fest, ensuring that there was no fairytale ending for the Women in Blue, who have now lost their third game in this tournament.
Skipper Meg Lanning leads Australia’s chase
Chasing 278, the opening pair of Rachael Haynes and Alyssa Healy added 121 runs for the first wicket. While Haynes scored 43 runs off 53 balls, Healy scored a quickfire 72 from 65 deliveries as they made the Indian bowlers toil hard for wickets. After the duo was dismissed, the onus was on captain Lanning to anchor the chase and she did it successfully. While the rain gods did make their presence felt and halted play for a while, the six-time world champions were way ahead of the asking rate.
India got the big wicket of Ellyse Perry after the break but, it did not matter too much as Meg Lanning completed the formalities. The talismanic batter was denied of a deserving century as she was caught by Pooja Vastrakar off Meghna Singh in the penultimate over and walked back with 97 runs to her name. Beth Mooney then ended the proceedings in the final over by smashing veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami for two boundaries.
Earlier, after being put into bat, the Women in Blue posted 277/7 from their allotted 50 overs. Their top-order including the likes of star opener Smriti Mandhana failed to click on the day but, skipper Mithali Raj rediscovered her rhythm with the bat. She, alongsicde Yastika Bhatia, added 130 runs for the third-wicket stand. While Bhatia scored 59 runs off 83 balls, the veteran batter top-scored with 68 runs from 96 deliveries. An unbeaten 47-ball 57 from power-hitter Harmanpreet Kaur and a supporting 28-ball 34 from Pooja Vastrakar also helped in India’s cause.

46 runs with nine boundaries by just playing the cut shot through huge gaps in the field.
Safe to say Meg Lanning 'cut' India out of the contest and India fell 'short' 🫣
Heartbreaking, but India were poor with their tactics.#INDvAUS #CWC22

Meg Lanning and Ellyse Perry batted just 27 innings to share 2000 partnership runs in Women's ODIs, clearly the fastest by any pair.#CWC22 #INDvAUS

Can't quite understand what took so long to put pressure on Meg Lanning's scoring areas square of the wicket. Not saying it might have changed the result at all but a bit lost about what we saw. #CWC22
