Hobart Hurricanes locked horns with Melbourne Stars in the 16th match of Big Bash League 2019-20. The match was full of stoppages as the rain intervened during the game a number of times. The showers also shortened the length of the match from 20 to 11 overs per side. However, in the end, the DLS method was used to decide the winner of the game.

Earlier, Stars won the toss and elected to field on a bowling friendly track and got off to a great start. Their fast bowler Daniel Worrall dismissed Hurricanes’ in-form opener D’arcy Short on the third delivery of the innings. The left-handed batsman failed to anticipate the late swing of the ball that took the inside edge of the bat and carried to the wicketkeeper Peter Handscomb’s gloves.

Later on, Simon Milenko (12 runs off 9 balls) and Caleb Jewell (26 runs off 28 balls) tried to revive the innings only to fail. Also, the fast bowling unit of Stars was making life tough for the Hurricanes batsmen. During the game, it looked like the match might get abandoned due to rain but that was not the case as the match was reduced to 11 overs and the batting side could only post a minimal score of 69 runs at a loss of five wickets.

Nathan Coulter-Nile turned out to be the best bowler for Stars, who registered good bowling figures of 2/12. He got brilliant support from the other end as Dale Steyn took two whereas Daniel Worrall scalped one wicket. The Stars were set the target of 80 runs in 11 overs in the chase courtesy the DLS method which wasn’t steep by any means.

However, James Faulkner, the seaming all-rounder, scalped two important wickets of Nic Maddinson and Nick Larkin in the very first over of the innings. Looking forward to the bowling friendly conditions the on-field batters Marcus Stoinis and Peter Handscomb steadily started building a partnership to help their side overcome the early setbacks.

It was not a cakewalk for the Stars, who had to hustle up for every run. Marcus Stoinis was the last man to get dismissed before the match was called off due to the rain for the final time. The right-handed batsman smashed 25 runs off 19 balls with three boundaries. The Men in Green were ahead by four runs then according to DLS method and eventually, they won the game. Nathan Coulter NileΒ was awarded Man of the Match for his brilliant bowling.

It also helped Glenn Maxwell and Co. in grabbing two important points and now they have moved up to the table on the second position.
