Sydney Sixers skipper Moises Henriques was set to miss out the home game due to illness and it was Johan Botha who led the side against the Adelaide Strikers under Travis Head. The stand-in skipper opted to bowl first after winning the toss.
Strikers’ start was thumped by Dwarshuis who had replaced Doug Bollinger in the side. He removed opener Jake Weatherland for a nought. Head along with opener Alex Carey with a brilliant partnership of 54 runs steadied the ship for the Strikers. He was stumped by Sam Billings during skipper Botha’s over.
Alex Carey carries the bat
Carey had deposited Dwarshuis for 2 sixes during the powerplay. After the wicket of Head, Carey took the attack to the opposition. He completed his half-century in 39 balls. After a small partnership of 25 runs with Collin Ingram, Carey was joined by Jonathan Wells.
Both the batters stuck to the task and build on an unbeaten 74-run partnership, that took the Strikers score to 167 runs. Carey remained not out for 83 runs in 59 balls while Wells smashed a massive six and four off the last two balls of the game during the course of his innings of 33 runs which came of just 19 balls.
Billy Stanlake removed Sixers’ opener Daniel Hughes in the 3rd over while Michael Neser dismissed Nick Maddinson for a duck. Jason Roy who was looking good during his stay at the crease as he hit 2 fours and a six became Laughlin’s victim leaving the Sixers struggling on 33 for 3.
Sam Billings made matters worse for his side as he played all around a full toss off Afghanistan star Rashid Khan. Jordon Silk who replaced Henriques combined with stand-in skipper Johan Botha and took the chase ahead for the Sixers. Silk batted brilliantly during his inning of 50 off just 32 balls. He was knocked out by Rashid in his last over.
O’Keefe and Dwarshuis produced a late blitz and drove the game into the last over. But they could not take the side over the line. Sixers needed 16 runs in the last over. Dwarshuis’s first ball six made the contest interesting but Michael Neser kept his cool and just gave away 3 more runs and they won the game by 6 runs.
