The political situation in Zimbabwe isn’t a pleasing any stretch of the imagination. However, despite all the tensions, the T20I tri-nation series involving Pakistan, Australia, and the hosts got underway. The Zimbabweans locked horns with Safraz Ahmed’s troops in the first match and the contest turned out to be completely one-sided in favor of the number one ranked visiting team as they won by 74 runs.

Fakhar and Asif shine

Hamilton Masakadza, the newly appointed captain, won the toss and decided to have a crack at the Pakistani batsmen. Mohammad Hafeez perished early, but Fakhar Zaman went on his own merry way to score 61 runs from 40 balls to help his team storm into the ascendancy. The likes of Hussain Talat and skipper Sarfraz got starts, but couldn’t convert them into substantial scores.

Zaman was nipped out by Tendai Chisoro in the 15th over after which the visitors found themselves in some sorts of trouble.  Shoaib Malik, Pakistan’s most experienced players, played a breezy knock of 37 runs from 24 balls. In the end, it was a breezy cameo from Asif Ali which helped the Men in Green to a formidable score of 182 on the board. Asif spanked four sixes in his short, yet useful innings.

Bowlers dictate terms

The target seemed to be an uphill task for the side which didn’t have some of its stalwarts. Chamu Chibhabha was dismissed by Mohammad Nawaz in the very first over and the skipper followed suit in the fifth over to leave the home team in dire straits. Mire, who looked solid during his knock of 27 runs also couldn’t carry on and became Nawaz’s second victim.

Debutant Tarisai Musakanda looked determined and racked up 43 runs in 35 balls to hold the innings together from one end, but the required rate mounted at an alarming rate. Moreover, they lost wickets in quick succession while never allowed them to make a comeback. Hafeez picked up the last two wickets and shot Zimbabwe out for 108 runs with 13 balls remaining in the match.
