After the second and third days’ play were washed of by rain, the second Test between Bangladesh and Pakistan seemed like heading towards a tame draw. But in the end, Babar Azam and Co. came out trumps by an innings and eight runs at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. Not only did they win the series 2-0, but also garnered 12 vital points in the 2021-23 World Test Championship cycle.

Sajid Khan blows Bangladesh away

When the final day started, Bangladesh were trailing by 224 runs with three wickets left in their second innings. Even as the Tigers were all, but out of contention for a win, Pakistan, well and truly, had a chance to secure a victory. But the visitors had to pick up 13 wickets to go over the line and the task wasn’t going to be easy. The hosts lost their last three wickets and were bowled out for 87.

More importantly, they gave a 213-run lead to their opponent. Sajid Khan, who picked up six wickets in the first day, picked up two more in the second to end with eight. It didn’t spring a surprise that Pakistan enforced the follow-on. In their second innings, the Tigers found themselves in all sorts of strife. They were reduced to 25 for four after their top four batters failed to get into double digits.

Pakistan hold nerves to emerge victorious

It was a 73-run partnership between Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das that resurrected the innings for the Tigers. Liton ended as the Bangladesh’s leading run-scorer in the series, scoring 45 with seven fours. After he got out, Mushfiqur and Shakib Al Hasan joined hands to put on 49 runs for the sixth wicket. Their partnership ended after the Bogra-born Mushfiqur was run out following his 48.

Shakib, however, went on to notch a half-century. The southpaw notched 63 runs off 130 balls before Sajid Khan rattled his woodwork. Thereafter, Babar Azam picked up his maiden international wicket in the form of Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Khaled Ahmed played out seven balls before Khan dismissed him. Taijul Islam and Ebadot Hossain tried their hearts out, but couldn’t survive the heat.
