On the fifth morning, the West Indies batsmen walked out to bat looking to wade out of troubled waters following their slight collapse on Day 4. Victory was never on the cards for the hosts. However, a draw was still achievable. As far as West Indies were concerned, a draw for them at Kingston would be equivalent to a win given the theme of the entire series.

Still 28 arrears, the remainder of the West Indies batting line-up would have looked to bat till Tea at least, which would erase Pakistan’s chances of clinching the Test. However, the visitors had quite different ideas on Day 5.

It all started with Mohammad Amir flattening Vishaul Singh’s off stump. A Bishoo boundary saw West Indies wipe out the deficit as the hosts walked into the lead.

Mohammad Abbas then removed Devendra Bishoo and Shane Dowrich in the space of 3 balls. Jason Holder paid the price for playing a loose shot to a Wahab Riaz delivery. Pakistan’s brilliant leggie on Day 4 Yasir Shah then came in to get rid of Alzarri Joseph for 1. He finished things off for Pakistan as Shannon Gabriel departed without troubling the scorers. Yasir added another 6 wickets to his tally in this landmark Test at Sabina Park. In the second innings, the leg-spinner was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 6 for 63.

An abundance of cracks were on offer, and the Pakistan spinners would have been expected to cash in. However, it was the Pakistan pacers who inflicted the early damage. After Mohammad Abbas’ double strike, the innings was heading only one way. Pakistan needed a mere 32 runs to record a historic victory. With ample time in hand, the visitors would have fancied doing it without much trouble.

Ahmed Shehzad and Azhar Ali walked out with clear intentions of wrapping up the game within a matter of overs. However, both openers were back in the hut after the first 3 overs. Shannon Gabriel saw the back of Shehzad, while Azhar Ali chopped an Alzarri Joseph delivery on to the stumps. Pakistan wouldn’t have been too satisfied to find themselves at 7-2 chasing just 32.

In walked the newest member of the 10k club Younis Khan. Pakistan went into Lunch 19 runs away from a 1-0 lead with Younis and Babar Azam at the crease.

It would have been a fairly relaxed Pakistan dressing room at Lunch, and as the two batsmen resumed, they nudged the ball to inch towards victory. Nevertheless, Younis was trapped in front as he tried to nurdle a Bishoo delivery to the leg side, much to the disappointment of the Pakistani supporters. They would’ve surely wanted their most prolific batsman to hit the winning runs in his farewell series. Pakistan were 8 away from victory.

One legend left the crease only to be replaced by another, the captain Misbah himself. He defended the first delivery, only to follow it up with two massive sixes. The skipper completed the formalities in Dhoni-esque fashion. There were handshakes all around as Pakistan were 1-0 up in the three-match series.
