Twitter Reactions: Pat Cummins' twin strikes keeps Australia on top despite fifties from Vince and Stoneman
While the duo of Vince and Stoneman was praised for their fantastic batting, Tim Paine got trolled for dropping a catch.
The much awaited Ashes series finally kicked off in Brisbane. While England managed a good start powered by the duo of James Vince and Mark Stoneman, Australia were able to level that with quick wickets in the end. Vince was the standout performer of the day for the visitors with his innings of 83.
Earlier in the day, it was skipper Joe Root who won the toss as England elected to bat first at the Gabba. Both Vince and Stoneman were included in the playing XI. Australia handed Test debut to Cameron Bancroft.
England weren’t off to a good start. Mitchell Starc who started brilliantly had Alastair Cook edge one to the first slip in his second over. With two new and inexperienced batsmen at the crease, the pressure was on England. However, they put up a stellar batting performance and recovered the visitors into a strong position.
Combining for a brilliant partnership of 125 runs for the second wicket, they went on to register splendid half centuries. While Mark Stoneman scored 53, James Vince put up a stupendous effort worth 83. Both the batsmen made sure England had the upper edge for a considerable period.
Stoneman was bowled by Pat Cummins as soon as he reached his fifty. As for Vince, he went for a suicidal run with Lyon making a perfect throw at the non-striker’s end.Root walked in with the score 145/3. However, Pat Cummins had him trapped in front of the stumps. The Australians reviewed the umpire’s decision who had adjudged it not out. The replays showed that the ball was clearly hitting the stumps and Root was dismissed cheaply.
On the other hand, Dawid Malan continued to bat with responsibility. Moeen Ali also stood his ground till the end of the day. He even hit a six off Nathan Lyon. Both managed to stay afloat till stumps on Day 1 as England were 196/4. Cummins was the pick amongst the Australian bowlers as he got a couple of wickets.
