Another nail biting encounter in the Caribbean Premier League enthralled the fans and interestingly, the same fixture yesterday provided a similar low scoring game. But St Kitts and Nevis Patriots pulled off a spectacular second win in two days, courtesy a terrific final over from Carlos Brathwaite.

Evin Lewis’ failed to contribute again in the second game and the onus was completely on Chris Gayle to provide a strong start. The big man played very cautiously and kept blasting the odd boundary in between. Mohammad Hafeez did stick with him for a while but his contribution was not significant.

Brandon King and Chris Gayle then played the entire innings out, adding 97 runs for the third wicket. But the partnership was not well appreciated by the fans as they didn’t score at a good rate in the death despite having so many wickets and some good strikers in the batting order.

Gayle completed a half-century, a relatively slower one by his standards and finished at 66 off 55 balls. The Patriots finished at 132/3 in their 20 overs, a good 20 runs short of what they would’ve liked, but a good bowling track pretty much kept them in the hunt.

A last over finish

Chadwick Walton, who impressed in the previous game, fell early and his opening partner Steven Taylor followed him soon. Babar Azam and Jason Mohammad then stitched a pivotal stand in the context of the match and batter their side out of the initial trouble. Though they didn’t score a brisk pace, they had wickets in hand to accelerate in the final stages.

Jason Mohammad added another crucial partnership with Gajanand Singh and they seemed ever so close to clinching two wins in two days. But Mohammad and Keemo Paul fell in quick succession to put the visitors into trouble. Gajanand and Emrit struck a couple of crucial boundaries in the final few overs and that brought the game to a crunching final over.

With 8 runs to get, Emrit ran himself out off a wide ball and the next ball was a dot. A single came off the next ball and Gajanand was back on strike. But he attempted a nothing shot and Brathwaite cleaned up his stumps. Sohail Tanvir ran himself out the very next ball, leaving 5 to get off the final ball. Brathwaite bowled a dot a sealed a mind boggling win for the Patriots, which takes them to the top of the table
