In a game of cricket, especially in the shortest format of the game, rain can be quite irritating from the neutral’s point of view. But no one can fight against nature, not even the Windies legendary cricketer Darren Sammy. In what was turning out to be a mouth watering encounter at the Darren Sammy national stadium at Gros Islet in St Lucia, rain played the role of an unwanted visitor, hence depriving the home team from staging a grand comeback.

It was a clash of Windian Titans as Sammy took on fellow team-mate and all-rounder Kieron Pollard. Winning the toss, Pollard went the other way and decided to have a go with the bat first. Openers Dwayne Smith and Kane Williamson laid a concrete foundation to the Barbados Tridents’ innings. But the star of the day was beyond doubts the big man Pollard.

Taylor, McClenaghan, Shillingford and other St Lucia bowlers were taken for a ride by Kieron Pollard who was batting as if he was given the duty by someone to give catching practice to the spectators. His blitzkrieg innings of  83 runs from 35 balls contain six mammoth over-boundaries and five boundaries. Jerome Taylor and Darren Sammy is still recovering from the assault they faced. The innings was finished on a high by Nicholas Pooran as they were just a boundary short from 200.

With Mount Everest to climb, Johnson Charles and Andre Fletcher have their foot on the accelerator from the very first ball. But the graphs went for a toll when two left-arm pacers Wahab Riaz and Wayne Parnell began to wreck havoc for the travelling side. Within a span of 16 balls, half of the St Lucia batting lineup was sitting in the dugout and the team was struggling at 53-5.

But if it is Pollard for the Tridents, it is Sammy for the Stars as the skipper decided to take the responsibility on his shoulders. The height of the mountain they had to climb was getting shorter with each stunning shot from the person on whom the stadium is named. The match was reduced to 19 overs due to rain. With a quick fire 60 from just 29 deliveries, Sammy was single handedly pulling the Stars towards their first victory.

But unfortunately for him, just when they needed 64 from 22 balls and the spectators were starting to get butterflies in their stomach, the rain decided to have a sneak-peek and the game was called off. Sammy’s heroics went in vain as, by the D/L method, the hosts were trailing by 21 runs. With this, the Tridents move up to 4th place and has secured their first points in this edition of CPL. Unfortunately for Stars, they will have to settle in the bottom of the table with three defeats in as many matches. Twitterati flooded the website with tweets regarding the nail-biting match that was cut short by rain.
