Indian spin ace Ravichandran Ashwin has been in a scintillating form of late and courtesy his brilliant and consistent performances, he has been named as the ICC Cricketer of the Year and also the ICC Test Cricketer of the year winning the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy in the process. The No.1 all-rounder has been on a record-breaking spree and has been taking heaps of wickets against all the oppositions.
The voting process was concerned with performances between 14 September 2015 to 20 September 2016 and in that window Ashwin had grabbed 48 Test wickets in 8 matches and scored 336 runs, taken 4 wickets in 2 ODIs and 27 wickets from 19 T20I matches. He had a wonderful time against the Proteas in 2015 where he picked up 31 wickets in 4 Tests at an astonishing average of 11.12 per wicket. He picked up a 5 wicket haul in all the three completed Tests and finished with match figures of 12/98. Courtesy his brilliant performances India drubbed the visitors 3-0.
Ashwin was brilliant with the bat too scoring two centuries in the tour of West Indies where India won the 4 match Test series 2-0. Despite the pitches not assisting his type of bowling, the Tamil Nadu lad finished with 17 wickets in 4 matches at an impressive average of 23.17.
He has played only two One Day Internationals this year bagging 4 wickets and boasts of an impressive T20 record too. During the end of 2015, Ashwin bagged four wickets in 2 T20Is against South Africa and followed it up with four more in the next series in Australia where India created history and whitewashed the hosts 3-0 in the series.
In the 3 match series against Sri Lanka at home, Ashwin scalped 9 wickets in 3 matches at an unbelievable average of 3.88 per wicket. Asia Cup in Sri Lanka followed where finished with 4 wickets in 4 matches.
Ashwin didn’t have a memorable World T20 at home where he could pick only 4 wickets in 5 matches. He also went for plenty of runs in the tournament which India lost in the Semi-final stage to West Indies.
His last T20 engagement was again with the same country who defeated them in the World T20 semi-final but the venue was different. For the first time, the two teams locked horns in the land of baseball for a two-match T20 series which West Indies won 1-0 after the 2nd match was abandoned due to rain. He finished with two wickets in the series.
Following the announcement by ICC, Twitterati was very active and congratulated the Star all-rounder who has been pivotal to India’s success in the recent past especially in the longest format of the game. Here are some of the best tweets

I was on ICC annual awards voting panel.
Worth pointing out Virat Kohli scored 451 Test runs at 45.10 with 1 x 100 during relevant period— John Etheridge (@JohnSunCricket) December 22, 2016
Remember the qualification period for the #ICCAwards ended in Sep. Due to recency factor of performances after that, some things look odd

No Kohli & Cook captain of the year for losing EIGHT Tests – what a joke. https://t.co/0LBW1nUmgT

Also fair to assume Cook won't be Captain of the Year…or even Captain at all. https://t.co/TlwJR7gpmx

Why on earth does it run only to September? Makes half the results look a mockery before year even finishes. https://t.co/E7kcBI0iZX
