Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin the overnight batting pair for India did exceptionally well to continue from 231/7 batting on 89 and 6 respectively to stitch a 98 runs partnership for the 9th wicket and took India to 296 before the partnership was broken as Rahane got out on 127. Ashwin stayed there and got to his 6th Test fifty, but South African bowlers did manage to bowl them out for 334. The pitch looked a good one to bat on and many would have expected the visitors to bat well as this was probably the best chance they had to bat big.

The surface looked probably the best for batting in this series and there was little to no assistance on offer for the spinners, this is what prompted skipper Virat Kohli to continue with his quicks for a considerable time and they did get the breakthroughs. Umesh Yadav got Elgar first to break the 36-run opening stand the best for South Africa in the series. Soon Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took over and once again the ball started to dominate the proceedings.

Jadeja cleaned up Temba Bavuma to open the flood gates and soon the Protea batsmen were rushing in and out of the pavilion on a surface where Rahane dwelled beautifully to stroke his 1st hundred at home. The left-arm spinner varied his pace and release points effectively to surprise the batsmen with yet another tool in his spin and were floored to hand him a five-wicket haul. Umesh and Ashwin got a couple, Ishant Sharma had one as well and in the end South Africa were bowled out for 121 inside the follow-on target while India hasn’t decided to enforce the follow-on and will bat again.
