Twitter Reactions: Reece Topley wreaks havoc with 6-wicket haul as England thump India by 100 runs to level the series
The decider match of the three-match series will be played on Sunday, July 17, in Manchester.
14th July will always be a special date for England because of their World Cup win that came on this very day in 2019. And playing a game three years down the line at the same venue on such a momentous occasion, they had to keep up with it. The English team celebrated a comprehensive 100-run win against India as they bounced back into the series and levelled it at 1-1.
It all started with Rohit Sharma winning the toss and putting the hosts to bat first. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami put English openers Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy under the test as the duo started off very slow and managed to put up just 17 runs off the first four overs. The Englishmen added 46 runs in the powerplay and lost one wicket in the form of Roy as Hardik Pandya got India the first breakthrough.
It was a slow innings, and England batters did not hit many runs, and the visitors kept taking wickets to break the momentum. It was in the second half when Moeen Ali stood up and anchored the innings. He found a good partner in David Willey and the two shared a composed 62-run stand for the seventh wicket. England was bowled out in 49 overs as they managed to put up 246 runs on board, and Chahal ended as the highest wicket-taker for his side with four in the bag.
India crumble in the chase
Reece Topley and David Willey gave their side a good start by dismissing the top-order lineup when Indian batters walked out for the chase. Rohit Sharma was stranded in front of the sticks and was the first to fall prey to Topley’s spell. Shikhar Dhawan struggled to score big time, and his misery came to an end when Topley sent him walking back for a 26-ball 9 runs.
Virat Kohli was cautious while playing, but he had a good start as he hit three fours to get off the mark. There was a fun banter between him and his RCB teammate Willey, who later got him off the crease. Rishabh Pant was dismissed for a duck before Kohli walked off and India’s situation in the game worsened.
No batter from the middle order could play a big knock and England had the last laugh as the bowlers dished out India for 146 runs in the 39th over. Reece Topley bagged a six-wicket haul and registered the best ODI figures (in Men’s ODI) of 6/24 at the Lord’s.
