Twitter Reactions: Reeza Hendricks loses out to ‘old wine’ Hashim Amla in race for World Cup berth

Amla has already played in two World Cups and was the deputy to captain AB de Villiers in the last one in 2015.

South Africa put all speculation to rest on Thursday by picking veteran Hashim Amla in their squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup starting next month. The four-time semi-finalists announced their 15-member squad for the showpiece event kicking off on May 30 and the 36-year-old Amla, who saw a dip in his form recently and missed the last ODI series against Sri Lanka at home, made it at the expense of batsman Reeza Hendricks who was giving him a close chase.

The selectors decided to go for the old wine Amla, keeping in view the experience factor. The Proteas have a number of players who will be playing in their final World Cup, including Amla, Dale Steyn, Imran Tahir and even captain Faf du Plessis. The Proteas will be keen to shed the unwanted ‘chokers’ tag for once and end up a multi-national tournament with the trophy.

Hendricks loses to Amla in numbers

Coming back to Hendricks’ omission, the 29-year-old right-hand batsman though had a few good knocks in the T20Is of late, his form in the 50-over format has been less inspiring. Moreover, the South African batting order is quite a bit crowded which made Hendricks’ selection all the more unlikely.

Comparing him with Amla, while Hendricks scored 455 runs in 18 matches since his debut last year (even after scoring a hundred on debut) at an average of less than 27, Amla has made 313 runs in eight innings in the same period at an average of above 44. Even in terms of strike-rate, Amla has done better than his competitor by registering 93.99 as against the latter’s 77.

Amla has already played in two World Cups and was the deputy to captain AB de Villiers in the last one in 2015. In 15 innings at the WC he has played so far, he has scored two hundreds and three fifties. He averaged over 40 in the last two editions of the tournament and scored over 300 runs on both occasions. Amla also has a great batting average in England (over 56) which also went in his favour.

The Twitterati also came up with its reaction to Hendricks’ omission:

Here is South Africa’s 15-man squad for World Cup 2019:

Faf du Plessis (c), JP Duminy, David Miller, Dale Steyn, Andile Phehlukwayo, Imran Tahir, Kagiso Rabada, Dwaine Pretorius, Quinton de Kock, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Hashim Amla, Tabraiz Shamsi.
