We are reaching towards the business end of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The four teams that have qualified for the playoffs was finalised quite some time back. Now, it is the race for the top two spots on the points table. With the Trinbago Knight Riders already sealing one spot, the Guyana Amazon Warriors and Jamaica Tallawahs battled it out in the penultimate league stage game for the other spot.

Jamaica Tallawahs won this game comprehensively by 8 wickets. Hence, they are at the second position on the points table at the moment. Furthermore, with the Tallawahs winning this game, the Knight Riders are now sure to finish at the top even though they lose their last game. On the other hand, if the Warriors are to make it to the second position, they will have to defeat Trinbago by a big margin in the last league game on Sunday.

The Warriors score big in the last 10 overs

The Warriors, after being put into bat first didn’t have the best of starts. They lost the wicket of Luke Ronchi for 6 runs. His partner, Cameron Delport was looking great with 34 runs off 23 balls until he holed out at cow corner where Rovman Powell took a one-handed screamer to dismiss him. A cautious innings from Shimron Hetmyer meant that just crawled up to 48 runs off 41 balls. At one stage, the hosts were 72/2 after 10 overs.

However, a collective effort from the batsmen helped them score big in the last 10 overs. Jason Mohammed notched up 54 runs off the 33 cherries that he faced and was well assisted by Chadwick Walton who piled up 25 runs towards the end of 16 deliveries. The team scored 101 runs in the last 10 overs. But, with Rovman Powell picking up 2 wickets and a run out in the 20th over, the Jamaica Tallawahs went into the dressing room with momentum on their side. The target for them was 174 in 20 overs.

Ross Taylor and Rovman Powell take the Tallawahs over the line

Chasing isn’t easy at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. But, the Tallawahs’ openers gave them an ideal foundation. Glenn Phillips and Johnson Charles added 40 runs in the first 4.3 overs before the former fell victim to yet another umpiring blunder. Phillips scored 27 off 17 balls but was given out LBW off Imran Tahir’s bowling even though there was a big inside edge. Soon, Tahir also dismissed his partner for 25 runs.

At this stage, Ross Taylor and Rovman Powell joined forces together. Although the former didn’t have a great tournament thus far, he has risen to the occasion on the right time. He was unbeaten on 60 off 41 deliveries. His innings included 5 fours and 3 sixes. On the other end, he was beautifully supported by Rovman Powell. He scored 55 off just 34 balls and was also the ‘Man of the Match’. The Tallawahs finished the chase in 18.1 overs to bag a win in their last league game.

Twitterati thoroughly enjoyed the all-round show from Rovman Powell. They also praised Ross Taylor for his knock and were utterly disappointed with the umpiring standards this year.
