Saint Lucia Kings, on Thursday, secured their second win in the 2021 edition of the CPL. The Faf du Plessis-led unit beat the Guyana Amazon Warriors by 51 runs at the Warner Park in St Kitts. The Warriors, in the meantime, kept hanging at the fourth spot after their third loss.

Chase comes to the party

After being put in to bat first, the Kings lost the early wickets of Andre Fletcher and Faf du Plessis. Romario Shepherd accounted for both the scalps in the second over. However, Mark Deyal and Roston Chase’s 74-run stand off 60 balls brought the Kings back into the contest.

After Odean Smith dismissed Deyal, Chase carried on and notched 85 runs off 50 balls with six fours and seven sixes. It was his knock that lifted the Kings to 149 in 20 overs. For the Warriors, Shepherd and Smith were the most successful as they picked up three wickets each.

Warriors crumble under pressure

In the run-chase, the Warriors’ top and middle-order crumbled miserably. Chandrapaul Hemraj, Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik, Shimron Hetmyer, and Brandon King couldn’t get into the double digits. As a result, the required rate went up in excess of 10 at the halfway stage.

Nicholas Pooran looked ominous as he scored a 26-ball 41 with two fours and five sixes. After Chase dismissed him, the writing was on the walls for the Warriors. Odean Smith entertained with an 18-ball 31, but his efforts could only take the Warriors to 98 in 16.5 overs.

Bowling performance was not up to the mark: Nicholas Pooran

After the Kings’ win, Chase felt satisfied with his performance. He also lauded the spinners for restricting the Warriors’ batters. Pooran, on the other hand, was a tad disappointed by his team’s bowling after the two early wickets.

“I was happy with my performance, I felt like I was hitting the ball well on a difficult surface, and we didn’t even talk during the break, but the guys really came out all guns blazing, so credit must go to the bowlers for the effort and the spinners came in to finish it off,” Chase was quoted as saying.

“I was happy about restricting them, but the bowling performance was not up to the mark after 2 wickets in the first over, and we gave too many free hits. In and after the powerplay the Kings bowled really well, and credit to them. We have been inconsistent in ticking boxes and we need to get it all together at the same time,” Pooran said.
