It was a reverse fixture between the Hobart Hurricanes and the Adelaide Strikers at the Aurora Stadium in Launceston, after the two sides met in Hobart only a couple of days ago. Much like their previous meeting, the Adelaide Strikers’ skipper Alex Carey elected to field first upon winning the toss.

The Strikers struck in the very first over as Will Jacks attempted to drive a Daniel Worrall outswinger, only to edge it straight to the fielder at point. Peter Siddle, who had a rather eventful outing with the ball, then got D’Arcy Short, who gave a feather-edge to a length delivery and an easy catch to the keeper to bring his innings to a dismal end.

Siddle rattles Hurricanes’ lower-order

Had it not been for the 75-run alliance for the fourth wicket between Ben McDermott and Colin Ingram after skipper Peter Handscomb fell to Wes Agar in the fourth over, the team would not have been able to give anything to their bowlers to defend. Reduced to 20 for 3, the Hurricanes were clearly struggling on a track that was favoring the pacers, however, both Mc Dermott and Ingram bided their time in the middle and played on the merit.

Both the sides opted to sub out a spinner for the extra batsman at the midway mark of the first innings. While Strikers’ spinner Briggs was subbed out for batsman Mathew Short, the Hurricanes subbed out spinner Johan Botha to include Mac Wright, who came out after the fall of McDermott (46 from 33). Adding 21 with Ingram (46 from 35) and 15 with Tim David (24 from 15), his addition did not bore too many fruits. In the meantime, Siddle jolted the Hurricanes thick and fast after he wrapped up their entire lower-order to finish with a career-best 5 for 16 from his four.

Weatherald and Carey ace the chase

Defending 146 would have taken some exceptional efforts with the ball and certainly some early wickets, which James Faulkner, who opened the bowling, provided to his side. By the end of the first over, Strikers deteriorated to 9 for 2 as Faulkner knocked over Phil Salt for 6, whereas he got his second scalp on the last ball as he dismissed Matt Renshaw. Despite making the early inroads, the Hurricanes’ bowlers looked insipid as Jake Weatherald and skipper Alex Carey added a match-winning 107 for the third wicket.

Having struck in the first over, they did not get another wicket until 14th, when Carey (55 from 40) mistimed a pull to pick Short at midwicket. Needing just 2 from 12, Nathan Ellis did strike twice as the Strikers lost Jonathan Wells (8) and Matthew Short (0), however, the game, by then, was long over as Ryan Gibson came out to finish the formalities and Weatherald stood unbeaten on 68 at the other end.
