Resuming from their overnight score of 196/4, England batted sensibly well in the first hour. Dawid Malan went on to register his third half century. On the other hand, Moeen Ali was also looking good in his 100 plus ball stay at the crease. However, both wickets fell in quick succession. While Mitchell Starc got the better of Malan, Nathan Lyon trapped Moeen in front of the stumps.
Chris Woakes was bowled for a duck as England were reduced from 246/4 to 250/7. Wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow their most consistent performer in the last season couldn’t make much of a difference as he was dismissed cheaply. Some contribution by Stuart Broad and Jake Ball helped them cross the 300-run mark. England managed to post 302 on the board.
Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins both picked three wickets each as they were the pick amongst Australian bowlers. Lyon got a couple of wickets while Josh Hazlewood also managed to get a wicket.
As for Australia, they didn’t have a great start. Debutant Cameron Bancroft got out early. Usman Khawaja who came in at No.3 continued his susceptibility against spin was trapped by Moeen Ali leaving two of the side’s most prominent batsmen Steve Smith and David Warner at the crease.
Warner who has been in splendid form fell into Jake Balls plan and gave Malan a catch at short mid-wicket. Peter Handscomb who came in at No.5 too couldn’t prolong his stay at the crease as Australia were reeling at 76/4. That’s when both Shaun Marsh and skipper Steve Smith got together and batted brilliantly to take Australia out of trouble.
They combined for an unbeaten partnership of 89 runs for the fifth wicket as Australia were 165/4 at stumps on Day 2. Smith is batting on 64 not out while Shaun is on 44. Twitter was at it’s splendid best throughout the game. While Smith was praised, the rest of the Australian top order was trolled. As for England, Bairstow got trolled while Malan was lauded.

Loved today’s play … Slow pitch but it produced fantastic strategies & tactics … @root66 had a really really good day as Skipper … #Ashes

My lip-reading isn't perfect but I'm reasonably certain the Australian fielders are telling James Anderson that he's plucking grunt. Must me some sort of in joke.

Test series between two teams with weak batting line-ups are easily the best kind of Test series. #Ashes

If Smith gets out here Aus won’t make 150. Massive period in the game.

We are one wicket away from Glamorgan's Shaun Marsh rescuing Australia with a brilliant hundred.

Starc is not nightwatchman – he is simply padded up because he is in at the wicket after next.#ashes

When Steve Smith passes 20 in Test matches he averages 95. How many do you think he'll score? #Ashes

It doesn't matter if Shaun Marsh makes 300 in this Test.
He will be dropped for a bowling all-rounder based on England's batting performance to date…which will be the wrong move.#Ashes

Feel for Bancroft. Shouldn't be opening. Renshaw and Warner should have been opening with no Marsh and Bancroft down the order #ashes

I owe Nathan Lyon an apology.
He was right when he said careers would be ended in this series.
Australian careers. #ashes— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) November 24, 2017
