Southern Brave, on Friday, July 30, managed to open their account in the men’s edition of the Hundred. They beat the Birmingham Phoenix by four wickets at the Rose Bowl in Southampton to get their campaign going. The Phoenix, meanwhile, lost their second game in the tournament.

Livingstone top-scores for Phoenix

After being put in to bat first, the Phoenix racked up 151 on the board. Finn Allen and Daniel Bell Drummond got out cheaply. Jake Lintott and Tymal Mills dismissed them. Moeen Ali, their skipper, couldn’t open his account as he became Lintott’s second victim in the first half of the innings.

However, Liam Livingstone and Mark Hammond’s 104-run unbeaten partnership propelled the Phoenix. Hammond stayed unbeaten on 44 off 29 with five fours and one six. Livingstone, on the other hand, remained not out on 68 off 44 with the assistance of five fours and four big sixes.

Vince comes to the party

In the run-chase, Quinton de Kock perished early to Adam Milne. However, James Vince and Devon Conway’s 55-run stand steadied the ship for the Brave. Vince scored 60 off 38 and his knock was laced with seven fours and two sixes. It was his opposite number Moeen Ali, who got rid of him.

Conway became Milne’s second victim. Ross Whiteley and Colin de Grandhomme couldn’t get into the double digits. In the end, Chris Jordan smashed 17 off nine balls to see the Brave through to a win with two balls left. For the Phoenix, Milne was the most successful with three scalps at 0.75.

It got fairly tight in the end: James Vince

After the win, Brave’s skipper Vince was over the moon and he credited his team for the wonderful show. He also stated that playing against Pakistan helped him to a large extent. He also had words of praise for Jordan, who played a cameo under pressure.

“It got fairly tight in the end. Credit to the guys, they held their nerve. (Whether his form in the Pakistan series has helped) Yes, probably gives me a lot of confidence and the ball comes on nicely here, so I enjoyed it,” Vince said.

“Mahela has done a lot of speaking and told everyone that we weren’t a million miles away last game. Just a few tweaks here and there were needed, and we did that. He (Jordan) is a man with a lot of experience, the kind of guy you need there in such situations,” he added.
