Shikhar Dhawan’s struggles against the moving ball were pretty evident and widely discussed even before the tour of England. Given his attacking approach and positive stroke-making, the selectors, as well as the team management, was still willing to back him. The Test series has gone from bad to worse for the left-hander and by the fifth Test, his spot in the team is already under doubt and he once again faltered in the first innings at The Oval.

The Indian team let England steal the advantage in the first session of day 2 after pulling things back really well in the last part of the opening day. Jos Buttler and Stuart Broad’s 98-run partnership for the 9th wicket took them over the 300-run mark and with 332 runs in the account English bowlers will be really confident running into the Indians.

There was a lot of speculation on whether one of Dhawan or KL Rahul will be dropped for the last Test since they had Prithvi Shaw in the team as backup keeper and the performance couldn’t get worse. But to just be sure the team management decided to still persist with the same pair.

Dhawan scored three runs in the first over from James Anderson and on the first ball of the second from Stuart Broad was hit plumb in front. It was an incoming delivery from Broad which is his most lethal weapon and the left-hander played for a completely different line to look clueless in the end. His bat was behind the pads and the ball hit him in front, Broad’s appeal made it evident that he didn’t even have to wait for the umpire’s decision.

The finger did go up and though Dhawan ran out of time contemplating whether to go for a review, the impact was marginally in and thus umpire’s call and the ball would go on to hit the stumps.

It was startling to see that in the seventh inning he is playing in England, the opener still hasn’t learned enough to negotiate the swing and seam movement thus failing to see off the new ball and has added to the team’s troubles.

Twitterati was baffled and couldn’t criticize him enough:
