The Sri Lankan team were under tremendous pressure coming into the 3rd ODI with two losses in three matches against the spirited Bangladesh team. Having won the toss at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Stadium in Colombo, Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza surprisingly chose to bowl first after their batsman earned the victory in the first ODI of the tour.

Sri Lanka began the innings in some sumptuous fashion with the openers Upul Tharanga, and Danushka Gunathilaka added 76 runs for the first wicket before the latter was dismissed by the offie, Mehedi Hassan.

Sri Lankan skipper was soon bowled in the 14th over of the innings by the right-arm quick Taskin Ahmed. Sri Lanka wobbled a bit with the score being 86/2. A quick partnership between Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal helped the Islanders to get on track. A mix-up between the duo helped Bangladesh to get their third wicket, this one of Chandimal after he had scored 21 runs off 35 balls.

Siriwardana too was dismissed in similar fashion after another faltering run out by the substitute fielder Shuvagata for a 16 ball-12 runs. At 161/4, Asela Gunaratne walked out to bat with the set batsman Kusal Mendis. The pair added 33 runs on the board before Kusal Mendis was dismissed by the left-arm quick Mustafizur Rahman. Mortaza, then dismissed Gunaratne for a well made 34 runs off 44 balls, with Sri Lanka’s total reading 216/4 after 44 overs.

A quick cameo of 52 runs from Thisara Perera was enough to propel the score past 250 runs. Sri Lanka finished the innings with 280 runs on the board for the loss of nine wickets.

Bangladesh, having scored 300 runs in the first ODI were confident with the chase with the openers Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar walking out in the middle. Nuwan Kulasekara picked up an amazing catch on his follow-up to dismiss the opener Tamim for just four runs.

Kulasekara followed it up with the wicket of Sabbir Rahman in the 3rd over of the innings after the latter knicked one off to the keeper. Bangladesh slumped further after Lakmal picked the wicket of Mushfiqur Rahim for a duck.

A brief partnership between Soumya Sarkar and Shakib Al Hassan helped the visitors to regain momentum in the match before Dilruwan Perera spun the ball past the opener Sarkar only for the keeper to complete an easy stumping. Quick wickets of Mossadek Hossain and Shakib Al Hassan slumped the visitors total to 118/6.

Lakmal came back to pick up the wicket of the Bangladesh all-rounder Mahmudullah, who was dismissed for seven runs in 9 balls. At the stroke of drinks in the 29th over, the visitors are batting at 137 for the loss of seven wickets.

After the drinks break, Bangladesh lost their skipper for 16 runs. However, a 54-run partnership for the 9th wicket has given a ray of hope for the visitors to clinch the series. But, Kulasekara picked the last two wickets in the space of 3 balls to help Lankans level the series 1-1.
