The first session of the fourth day was all about Bangladesh. After finishing the third day at 318/3, the batters continued to play the game with calm and composure and did not let the opposition any chance for a wicket. Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das put up a brilliant partnership as they sailed past the Sri Lankan seamers and spinners. The bowling unit was put under gallons of pressure, and at the end of the first session, all of them remained wicketless.

Mushfiqur kept scoring runs for his side and went on to become the first Bangladesh player to amass 5000 Test runs, and followed it up with his eighth Test century. Sri Lanka were given the required breakthrough by Kasun Rajitha, who sent Das packing as the Bangladeshi innings slowed down. Tamim Iqbal, who returned with the bat after Das’ wicket, couldn’t survive Rajitha’s spell and walked off on the first ball.

Shakib Al Hasan had the task of stabilizing the innings when he entered. Mushfiqur and Shakib got their team back on track by putting some runs on the board, but the pace was slow. Sri Lanka ended the session on a high note and took the upper hand. Bangladesh would have preferred the innings to conclude in a different manner, as they would have liked a few more runs.

Bangladesh scalp two quick wickets before ending the fourth day

However, they piled up 465 runs on the board and held a 68-run advantage at the end of their innings. Sri Lanka fought back effectively with the ball to restrict the hosts, and they came out with a specific strategy in the session that paid off. They did a fantastic job with the ball by restricting Bangladesh from scoring much but had a task in front of them to put up another big total with the bat in the second innings.

Just a few overs into the game, Sri Lanka lost their opening batter, Oshada Fernando, to a run-out, which led to Lasith Embuldeniya taking his position early. It was Taijul Islam who provided Bangladesh with a massive wicket before putting curtains on the day’s play as he scalped Embuldeniya for mere two runs, and Sri Lanka ended the fourth day at 39/2. The fifth day is nicely set up now and the pressure will be on the visitors to make sure they don’t collapse in their second essay.
