St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, under the leadership of Dwayne Bravo, have won the CPL 2021 after beating the Saint Lucia Kings by three wickets in the final at the Warner Park. The game went right down to the last ball and the Patriots got across the finishing line off the very last ball.

Cornwall, Chase, Paul shine

After electing to bat first, the Kings notched 159 on the board for the loss of seven wickets. Rahkeem Cornwall was attacking at the top as he scored a 32-ball 43 with the help of five fours and two sixes. Fabian Allen gave the Patriots some breather after he rattled Cornwall’s woodwork.

Roston Chase made a 40-ball 43 but failed to step on the gas after Naseem Shah got rid of him. In the penultimate over, Keemo Paul smashed three sixes in a row off Dominic Drakes to help the Kings reach a respectable score. Fawad Ahmed and Shah picked up two wickets each.

Drakes stands tall

In the run-chase, the Patriots lost the early wickets of Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis. However, Joshua Da Silva and Sherfane Rutherford scored 37 and 25 respectively to get their innings going. Kesrick Williams got rid of Da Silva to break the ominous partnership at the halfway mark.

Fabian Allen scored 20 after which he holed out in the deep. However, Drakes held his nerve and stayed unbeaten on a 24-ball 48. His knock was laced with three fours and as many sixes. With five runs needed off two balls, he smashed a four through the off-side and helped the Kings.

It is a bit hurtful, says Andre Fletcher

After the win, Bravo said how he had motivated Drakes to play well in the tournament. Fletcher, on the other hand, was a tad dejected and felt that the Kings’ bowlers could bowled better to Drakes

“I want to commend my team without whom this would not have been possible. This is for the fans; they have come out in numbers and they are our 12th man. Belief. And giving people opportunity, backing people to perform. The first session I had with Drakes I told him you are not an emerging player, you are one of my main players and this is your tournament,” Bravo said.

“It is a bit hurtful. The guys played well, and I cannot fault them. We fought well and right to the end. Drakes played really well and won them the game. The execution I believe, that 19th over if we could have tucked up Drakes and left few more for the final over,” Fletcher said.
