It was time for a match between Bangladesh and West Indies. Both the teams were reeling at the bottom of the table as they had not won any of their matches thus far. This was the fourth game for both sides and a loss here would mean curtains for the side.
Brian Lara won an important toss and decided that the Caribbean side would bowl first. The Bangladeshi openers helped their side get off to a good start. They were involved in a 64-run partnership which came at a healthy rate too. Nazimuddin played the aggressor’s role as he scored 33 runs off 24 balls while Mehrad Hossain played a solid supporting knock.
Hossain was the top scorer as he played a fine knock of 44 runs. Aftab Ahmed and Mohammad Sharif played attacking cameos to help their side reach a total of 169 runs at the end of 20 overs. While Aftab scored 31 runs in 21 balls, Sharif scored 26 runs in just 13 balls.
Sulieman Benn provides a match-winning spell
While all the other bowlers went for above eight runs per over economy, one bowler stood apart. Sulieman Benn not only bowled economically but also got important breakthroughs. He conceded only 17 runs in his four overs and also managed to secure three wickets. Ryan Austin got two wickets but went for almost 11 runs an over.
Chasing a target of 170, West Indies came out with an aggressive approach. The openers put pressure on the Bangladeshi bowlers and reaped good rewards. Both of them got starts but failed to convert it into a big inning.
When Kirk Edwards came out to bat it seemed like he wanted to finish the match in a hurry. He scored 46 runs off only 28 balls in a knock which included six boundaries and two maximums. He could not get to his fifty as he was dismissed by Abdur Razzak.
However, Captain Lara and Mahendra Nagamootoo took their side to a safe victory. They finished the game in 18.5 overs and won by five wickets. Lara scored an unbeaten 31 off 23 balls while Mahendra scored an unbeaten 16. The Bangladeshi bowlers could not do much and as a result, their team has now suffered four losses in a row. They are eliminated from the tournament and have only pride to play for in their last encounter against South Africa.
