Twitter Reactions: Sydney Thunder ride on DLS to edge past Melbourne Stars

Nick Larkin scored 28 runs from 13 balls, but all in vain.

The match between Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars at Manuka Oval in Canberra was marred by rain but eventually produced a result. The Duckworth Lewis Stern (DLS) method was applied and the Thunder managed to win by 15 runs. The Stars, captained by Glenn Maxwell, would consider themselves unlucky as they were set a revised target of 90 runs from eight overs.

Sangha leads the charge

Stars won the toss and elected to field first. The Thunder got off to a brilliant start as Jos Buttler and skipper Shane Watson put on 39 runs from 28 balls after which Adam Zampa castled Buttler for 20. Watson looked good for his 22 and he fell prey to leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane. In the very same over, Lamichhane accounted for the wicket of Callum Ferguson for 15.

Joe Root didn’t look comfortable and managed only 18 runs at a tad over a run-a-ball. However, the teen sensation Jason Sangha and Daniel Sams cobbled together stand of 77 runs from 41 balls and lifted the Thunder to 181/5 in 20 overs. Sangha played stupendously and racked up 63 runs from 36 balls with four boundaries and as many sixes. Sams scored 34 runs from 21 balls.

Thunder romp home

With a daunting revised target, Travis Dean and Ben Dunk opened the batting, but both batsmen perished in quick succession to Sams and Nathan McAndrew respectively. The Stars were dealt with a body blow when Sams got the prized wicket of opposition skipper Maxwell, who couldn’t open his account. In the next over, off-break bowler Chris Green got rid of Marcus Stoinis.

The Stars lost their fifth wicket in the form of former Windies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, who could only manage 11 runs. Even as Nick Larkin flayed his willow to good effect and scored 28 runs from 13 balls with three boundaries and a six, Evan Gulbis smashed one over the ropes to score 10 runs.  But the required rate kept mounting and eventually went out of the Stars’ radar.
