There has been some serious competition for the top spot in this year’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Imrul Kayes-captained Comilla Victorians managed to thump Chittagong Vikings at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram by seven wickets (Duckworth Lewis Stern Method) and stomped to the top of the points table. The Vikings are at the sixth position with six victories.

Mosaddek fights hard

Persistent rain made sure that the match was pruned down to 19 overs per side. The Vikings won the toss and opted to bat first and they could only manage 116 runs in 20 overs. Mohammad Saifuddin made sure that Shadman Islam and Yasir Ali couldn’t even open their accounts. In the fifth over, Wahab Riaz got rid of the opposition captain Mushfiqur Rahim. Mahedi Hasan got rid of Najibullah Zadran.

Shahid Afridi accounted for the important wickets of Cameron Delport and Sikandar Raza. Nevertheless, the right-handed Mosaddek Hossain blended caution with aggression and scored  43 from 25 deliveries and his knock was laced with three boundaries and as many over-boundaries. For the Victorians, Saifuddin, Riaz and Afridi picked up two wickets each even as off-spinner Mahedi got one wicket.

Tamim takes charge

Tamim Iqbal and Anamul Haque Bijoy didn’t blaze away in the Victorians’ run-chase but ensured that their team got off to a steady start. Both added 26 runs from 28 balls before Anamul fell prey to fast bowler Khaled Ahmed for eight from 13 balls. Thereafter, Shamsur Rahman joined Tamim in the middle and the duo compiled together a vital partnership of 55 runs that made the match a one-sided affair.

Shamsur played some delightful strokes and racked up 36 runs from 22 balls with three fours and two sixes. Abu Jayed cut short his knock in the 14th over. A couple of overs later, Kayes became Jayed’s second victim. At the other end, Tamim looked solid and saw his team through to victory with 14 balls to spare. The left-hander scored 54 from 51 deliveries. Thisara Perera also chipped in with a seven-ball 10.
