The fourth day of the India v England, Mumbai Test was all about one man, the Indian skipper Virat Kohli. He started the day unbeaten on 147 with Jayant Yadav for company. This proved to be the partnership the Indian team needed to turn the tide. Virat first got to his double century in the first session of the day; it was his third double ton of his career and the season.

Rookie Jayant at the other end supported him really well and looked a more accomplished batsman than his position of No.8 suggests. He also scored his maiden Test ton and the duo added 251 runs together before the offie was finally dismissed. Virat carried on after his double for a bit but was finally dismissed on 235 by Ben Stokes. The Indian innings folded for 631 and they managed a vital lead of 231 runs.

India had enough time on the day to come hard at England, while England would have come out to bat with a mindset of dealing with the Indian spinners it was swing bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar who got the first wicket. Keaton Jennings the centurion from the first inning was dismissed for a golden duck. After an initial burst of pace the spinners were in the attack and Ravindra Jadeja who is the most potent bowler on such a surface got going soon.

He was able to extract a lot of turn as well as bounce from the wicket and like he is so often was absolutely accurate with his lines and lengths while varying the pace to deceive the batsmen. Jadeja always looked threatening and had Alastair Cook leg before with the one that didn’t turn much and Cook shuffled across only to miss the ball. He soon sent back Moeen Ali to the pavilion as well and England were in early trouble.

Jayant also got into the act with the ball and scalped the big wicket of Joe Root. Jonny Bairstow who has been the most certain English batter right through the series once again got in and tackled the spin trio to reduce the deficit big time. Ben Stokes also played a few aggressive shots but was dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin trying to reverse sweep. The offie struck once again in the last over of the day to send back night watchman Jake Ball and England ended the day 6 down and 49 runs behind.
